Learn how to clean a steam iron and remove mineral deposits with simple steps. Keep your iron gliding smoothly and extend its life.

Quick answer

Clean your steam iron regularly with a vinegar-and-water solution to dissolve mineral deposits, then wipe the soleplate clean. This prevents clogging and keeps the iron gliding smoothly.

Why mineral deposits build up

Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that accumulate inside your steam iron over time. These deposits can clog steam vents, reduce steam output, and leave brown or white residue on clothes. Regular descaling prevents these issues.

What you need

Distilled white vinegar, water, a bowl, cotton swabs, and a soft cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners or scouring pads that can scratch the soleplate.

How to descale your steam iron

  1. 1. Empty and unplug: Unplug the iron and let it cool completely. Empty any remaining water from the tank. Never descale a hot iron — you risk burns and damaging the soleplate.
  2. 2. Mix the descaling solution: Mix equal parts distilled white vinegar and water. Fill the water tank halfway with this solution. Use distilled water for the rinse step to avoid adding new minerals.
  3. 3. Heat and steam: Plug in the iron and set it to a medium-high steam setting. Let it steam for 2–3 minutes over an old towel or sink. Then unplug and let the solution sit in the tank for 15 minutes. If your iron has a self-clean function, use that instead of manual steaming.
  4. 4. Empty and rinse: Pour out the vinegar solution. Fill the tank with plain distilled water, heat again, and steam over the towel to flush out residue. Repeat if needed. A white vinegar smell may linger — rinsing twice usually removes it.
  5. 5. Clean the soleplate: Once cool, wipe the soleplate with a damp soft cloth. For stubborn spots, dip a cotton swab in vinegar and gently clean the steam holes. Wipe dry. Never use metal tools or abrasive pads — they will scratch the soleplate.
